Factors of local recurrence and organ preservation with transoral laser microsurgery in laryngeal carcinomas; CHAID decision-tree analysis.

2018

BACKGROUND Indications of transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) are conditioned by the risk of local relapse. OBJECTIVE To evaluate prognostic factors of local relapse and local control with TLM (LC-TLM). METHODS Local relapse and LC-TLM were evaluated in 1119 patients. Logistic regression and CHAID decision tree analysis were performed. RESULTS Local relapse correlated to previous radiotherapy failure (8.45, CI 95%: 2.64-27.03; P < .001), paraglottic involvement (2.42, CI: 1.41-4.15; P = .001), anterior commissure involvement (2.12, CI: 1.43-3.14; P < .001), grade of differentiation (1.74, CI: 1.18-2.57; P = .005), and alcohol consumption (1.4, CI: 0.99-1.98; P = .057). Local relapse tended t…

Distribution patterns of vimentin-immunoreactive structures in the human prosencephalon during the second half of gestation.

1999

Neuronal migration is guided by long radially oriented glial fibres. During late stages of development radial glial cells are transformed into astrocytes. A predominant intermediate filament protein within radial glial cells and immature astrocytes is vimentin. In this study fetal brain sections were used to demonstrate the transient features of vimentin-positive radial glia. In the lower half of the cerebral wall of the 6th gestational month bundles, curvature, and crossing of vimentin-positive fibres are regularly seen. Moreover, fibres terminating on vessels are observed. In the upper half fibres are radially oriented; when ascending towards the pial surface the number and diameter of fi…

Muscular alteration in agyria with pyramidal tract anomaly

1986

A 4-year-old boy with a history of muscular hypotonia, mental retardation, microcephaly, and generalized convulsions was found at autopsy to have agyria, agenesis of the anterior commissure and posterior corpus callosum as well as an abnormal decussation of pyramidal tracts which descended in the spinal dorsal columns. Postmortem muscular alterations included type IIc fiber hypertrophy and type I fiber grouping, variably expressed in individual muscles and intramuscular fascicles. This may represent a developmental delay compatible with a gestational age between the 34th and 40th week. These studies also indicate the importance of examining (a) multiple samples of postmortem muscles and (b)…

Modified fronto-lateral laryngectomy in treatment of glottic T1(a-b) cancer with anterior commissure involvement

2010

Abstract Objective Evaluation of clinical and oncological safety of the modified fronto-lateral laryngectomy in the treatment of T1a-b glottic cancer. Methods Retrospective review of charts of patients managed with classical fronto-lateral laryngectomy or with our modified technique using a cervical fascia flap and a false cord flap to reconstruct the defect. Results No recurrence of cancer was observed in the present series and slight dysphonia was present in all cases. The patients managed with classical technique required a revision surgery for granulations or anterior synechia in 4 cases; those managed with modified technique did not need a second intervention. Conclusion The fronto-lat…

The Forebrain of the Blind Cave Fish Astyanax hubbsi (Characidae)

1997

This paper presents a survey of the cell groups in the telencephalon of the teleost Astyanax hubbsi, based on series of transverse sections stained with the Nissl-Kluver-Barrera and Bodian procedures. The work was conducted for two reasons. Firstly, it was intended to determine the contribution of the forebrain of blind cave fish to certain forms of behavior. An understanding of the anatomy of the telencephalic organization is essential for such a neuroethological approach. The second purpose was to provide the cytoarchitectural basis for the experimental analysis of the fiber connectivity of the telencephalon of A. hubbsi. Furthermore, information about the forebrain of characids is widely…

Transoral Robotic Surgery for Early-T Stage Glottic Cancer Involving the Anterior Commissure—News and Update

2022

BackgroundAbout 20% of all glottic carcinomas involve the anterior commissure (AC), and AC involvement was deemed to be a risk factor of local recurrence and poor prognosis. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) has been developed for a panoramic view of the AC and en-bloc resection of the tumor by multidirectional dissection with endo-wristed instruments. With satisfactory preliminary results, we would like to update the data with a bigger cohort and present the news on using TORS for salvage treatment of recurrence from irradiation failure.MethodsFrom July 2010 to December 2019, 22 patients with early T1 and 2 stage primary (n = 11) or recurrent (n = 11) glottic cancer with AC involvement rece…

Impact of the anterior commissure involvement on the survival of early glottic cancer treated with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy: a retrospective study

However, the treatment of early glottic tumors with the involvement of the anterior commissure remains controversial. The studies about the role of anterior commi…

Transient hypothyroidism during lactation arrests myelination in the anterior commissure of rats. A magnetic resonance image and electron microscope …

2018

Thyroid hormone deficiency at early postnatal ages affects the cytoarchitecture and function of neocortical and telencephalic limbic areas, leading to impaired associative memory and in a wide spectrum of neurological and mental diseases. Neocortical areas project interhemispheric axons mostly through the corpus callosum and to a lesser extent through the anterior commissure (AC), while limbic areas mostly project through the AC and hippocampal commissures. Functional magnetic resonance data from children with late diagnosed congenital hypothyroidism and abnormal verbal memory processing, suggest altered ipsilateral and contralateral telencephalic connections. Gestational hypothyroidism aff…
